The Ecology of Cheetah in Rangelands of Northern Kenya

Cheetahs in northern Kenya increasingly rely on rangelands and conservancies where habitat fragmentation, shifting prey availability, and human activities influence their survival. While cheetah ecology is well-studied in national parks, little is known about fine-scale prey distribution, seasonal changes in prey density, or how habitat structure shapes prey selection in private and community lands like Loisaba, Suyian and Mugie. Information on individual cheetahs, identity, movements, and morphological variation, also remains limited in these landscapes.

This study fills these gaps by quantifying prey density, assessing prey preference relative to habitat features, identifying individual cheetahs morphologically, and modelling habitat occupancy to guide long-term cheetah conservation in northern Kenya.
